Still Suite (2022)
"Still Suite” - named for Still Creek which runs through Renfrew Ravine in East Vancouver - was inspired by the idea that a forest is a single organism, with the mycelia (fungal root system) being the neural network of intercommunication. It is light allegory for the awakening of primal spiritual awareness and a joyous expression of life struggling to exist and flourish in a holistic dance of common, but not always aligned, purpose. It is also a celebration that Still Creek is still a creek. Thanks to the depth of the ravine, it's voice can still be heard - unlike the numerous other original creeks in Vancouver it was not completely filled, culverted or redirected into storm sewers around housing development as the city grew.
The Live audience experienced the performance as an open walk-through of a beautiful community-created lantern installation in the ravine as part of Vancouver’s Moon Festival. The performers were widely dispersed a lot of the time, on both sides of the creek, giving unique individual audience perspectives, depending on where they were in the environment. The piece moves through several musical and movement textures, but does so slowly and organically so as to simulate imperceptible but eventually profound change.
While the video collage does give an obviously embellished impression of any individual audience person’s visual experience, it lets the viewer see more of what was happening all-round - all of the visual “action” layers are synchronized to the music as performed. The multi-track live recording has been mixed to a static stereo image, which does not track movement on-screen but delivers a more concert-like listening experience.
